Texan freed after 30 Years in Prison as an Innocent Man!
Yes it's in the news and in papers all across this country. As a regular commenter on USA TODAY's ON DEADLINE, the article is pretty much cookie cutter about Mr. Dupree's freedom, but again, the "peanut gallery" (the public comments) just lets you know where our society's thinking seems to be based. And here is my initial comment:
"It is no surprise, from some of the comments of what would be considered the general public, that innocent persons are continually falsely accused and wrongfully convicted in this country. The 'better safer than sorry" attitude is not Justice; it's Justification. It's what lets YOU sleep better at night because you would never be in this situation and neither would this man (or woman in some cases) if he wasn't a criminal. The fact is that thousands of innocent men and women are behind bars when absolutely no DNA evidence exists; there are no eye witnesses; there's no forensic evidence that ties the accused to the crime and nothing more than the word of one person against another. So why under standard rules of evidence, the presumption of innocence and proving a case beyond a reasonable doubt, can someone still be wrongfully convicted by a jury of their peers? Because cases need to be closed and won and the public wants closure so they can sleep at night, and if making a self-serving moral decision to convict not based in any fact or coroborating evidence, but merely because it's safer to put someone behind bars than to let one go, then you are part of the problem. Mr. Dupree lost his freedom and endured unspeakable teatment in prison. There will be stories he will never tell or experiences he will never share. Yet some of you still refuse to celebrate his freedom and recognize the injustices that were done that took his freedom away. You can't simply call it a mistake, an error of judgement. When those that caused the injustice never apologize or ever become accountable for their wrongdoings, you have to wonder who the real criminals are and the unsuspecting public that becomes their accomplises! No offense Mr. Stanglin, but one learns more from the public comments about our society than the articles we read."
